Is Your Why Big Enough?

WHY??????

We have all met at sometime, the rich guy who no one likes. He has a lot of money, but his kids don't want anything to do with him and he has lost count of his wives. At first glance it would be easy to blame his money or to blame capitalism in general for allowing him to amass that much wealth. The real problem is not his money. Money only magnifies who you already are. If you are a poor jerk, you will still be a jerk when you have money. The money doesn't cause the bad behavior, it just gives the options that were not there without money.

Many people have a view that money causes too many problems and so they subconsciously chase away money. But the real problem is not starting with the foundation. When the US economy was decimated in 2008 -09 most people were blaming capitalism and said this is proof that capitalism doesn't work. But capitalism is the best option out there.... The problem comes when capitalism is asked questions that it can't answer. You see, capitalism can allow for great freedom and allow for wealth accumulation, but capitalism can't answer WHY?

Why make more, why buy a second home, why buy a bigger home, why buy an expensive car and not a cheap one? Capitalism can't handle the big questions of life, but why would we expect it to?

Capitalism is a great track to run on for productivity and efficiency and free markets, but you can't look to it to answer why. You have to answer that some other way.

Many people answer why through the faith they belong to or their spiritual beliefs. This is the proper realm for this question....

Why is a giant question....if you have kids, it is a question you hear hundreds of times a day. But it can be a good question. Specifically, for this article, we are talking about asking the WHY of your work life. Why are you in business for yourself or why are you working so hard?

When you can answer your specific why, you have made a huge step toward success. Deciding what you want is a hard but necessary first step. In my coaching business it is one of the most difficult areas to work through. I mean it seems easy enough, right? Doesn't everyone know what they want? They want wealth and power and happiness and health and family and friends and meaningful work and purpose, etc.

But when you break it down, what do you really want? What is your why that will keep you going through the discouragement, the rejection, the failure. What is your why that when you succeed you know that you accomplished what you wanted and for the right reasons.

Imagine a scary moment....

Imagine that some bad guys have kidnapped a person very close to you (spouse, child, parent, etc.).

They give you an ultimatum.... You have to do _________________ in 30 days. If you accomplish this, your loved one will be completely fine, but if you fail, bad news!

Now, in the blank above, fill in something you are struggling to accomplish.

What is it? Maybe make $10,000 or get that new job or fix that nagging problem....whatever you put in that blank, no matter how big or daunting, I would not bet against you accomplishing it. You know why? Because you have a HUGE WHY!! With this kind of leverage, you would act differently...you wouldn't put things off, you wouldn't fear rejection, you wouldn't sit around acting confused and telling yourself you just don't know why you can't get motivated.

You would be unstoppable! You would be the person you are capable of being. So, why can't you do that now?

You don't have a big enough or clear enough WHY......
