Being A Healthy Freelancer

By Matt Mccarten

The freelance lifestyle can be fantastic, no boss, no nasty employees and you get to work the hours you want. Unfortunately there are some unseen downsides which crop up a couple of months after you begin...and many of these can really effect your health.

When working for yourself you are solely responsible for finding work, if you don't find the work (and actually finish the work!) you will have no money for you or your family. It is a big burden to shoulder. Building up a reserve of money in the bank for slow days will help - but is very difficult for a new company to start. This money worry can lead to a lot of stress - and can harm your body.

You may find yourself taking every job that comes your way, never saying no, staying up all hours desperate to claw every bit of money in case you can't find any more. You may be able to last doing this for a few months - but rest assured you will burn out (it happened to me )

You simply must take time out from work, have a cut off point, even if its late. For example 8:30pm - after this point you simply don't check the email and you are not allowed near the computer. Ask your partner to help you with this - it will be a struggle believe me!

Another tip which will work wonders - exercise and good diet. Fill your body with healthy fuel, fruit, veg and drink lots of water - try to stay away from coffee, you can come dependent on it. Try going to the gym first thing in the morning or last thing at night to work out your frustrations.

job, jobs, career
