You would probably ask, is it possible to achieve career success with 5Ds? Yes, it is possible. These 5Ds I am referring to stands for Dependability, Determination, Delight, Detailed and Devoted. Not only will they increase your chances of achieving career success, they will also increase your motivation at work.

Throughout my working experience, I have had the chance of observing bosses, colleagues and staff members perform their tasks. And I noticed a pattern that exists with people who achieve career success in the level relevant to them.

They carried with these 5 traits when tackling their work.


1. Dependability

Dependability means taking first person responsibility when you are given a job to do. You never blame someone for your work that is not done right. It means you take the initiative to see the job is done to the best of your ability. You take great pride in the work assigned to you.

When you are dependable, you become a competitive advantage for your organization. You are seen as someone worthy of more important assignments and hence increase your chances of achieving career success.

2. Determined
Being determined means having the stamina to see things through regardless of how tough they are. If you are to achieve career success, having determination is one critical factor. It not only ensures that you complete your work at hand no matter how tough, it also ensures that you achieve your long-term career goals.

A determined person is usually fueled by a keen sense of duty and passion for the work. When you do your work with passion, the quality will shine through and people will notice it.

3. Delight
Be a delight to work with in your workplace. No one likes to work with a grouch. Having a pleasing disposition, smile, never say die, being positive regardless of how huge the challenge, is part of being delightful at work. A delight at work carries with them a positive attitude. It is the positive energy that they rub off on you that makes you want to work with them. It is a real and sincere feeling.

When you carry with you a smile and a positive attitude at work, you are known as a delight. You will notice that colleagues wish for you to achieve career success. You can see them wish positive things for you.

4. Detailed
A detailed worker never lets work that is haphazard leave their hands. A detailed person slogs to ensure that everything that is supposed to work is looked into. They are the people that take that extra precaution and the initiative to make sure things become near perfect. Just enough is not in their vocabulary. Good enough just isn’t good enough for them.

For the detailed, only the best is good enough. When you are a detailed person your bosses trust you with jobs that need multitasking. They know you can be relied on to make sure everything little aspect is looked into. Such tasks increase your chance to achieve career success.

5. Devoted

A devoted worker is an enthusiastic worker. When you become an enthusiastic worker, you are focused on the tasks at hand. You also become focused on the bigger goals of the organization. Due to this you are not as vulnerable to the ‘disturbing ghosts’ in your organization that is always causing disruption by being a complainer and spreading negative energy.

In order to achieve career success, it is important for you to cultivate these 5Ds. They help increase your chances of achieving career success. Besides, these qualities will also increase your work motivation.

Being new in the working world, I am sure you are eager to show off your newfound skills and knowledge. However, out there in the working world some basic work effective habits can increase your productivity. By being consistently effective at your work increases your chances of success in your career.
The 5 effective work habits are:

1. Volunteer For Assignments
One of the best ways to signal that you are a keen learner and are not afraid of hard work is to volunteer for assignments. Especially assignments that no one seems interested to do.

However, before that do assess your own skills and knowledge to see if you can confidently accomplish it. If you are confident in completing the task in full and perfection, go ahead and volunteer for it.

However, do remember one thing. Under promise and over deliver on the assignment you volunteered. Do not be too confident that you turn a perfect opportunity into mess. Once you start the project, see it till the end. You would be seen as someone who is courageous enough to take on additional assignments. You would also be seen as someone who follows through in your work. This is the first habit you need to internalize.

2. Be Nice To People
I am sure we have all heard this often enough. Be nice to people regardless of their rank and designation. It sounds philosophical but when you are nice to people they go out of their way to help you. And being new in an organization you would never know what sort of help you would need. Colleagues often like to work with nice talented people. When you have this effective work habit you increase the chances of people wanting you to work on their team.

Being nice to people is just common courtesy. There is nothing extra ordinary about this particular habit that you need special skills. A smile in the morning and a “Good Morning” is a good start. In this day and age, people working in pressurized environments often use stress as an excuse when they blow up. Is this necessary? Nice is often reciprocated by nice. In fact, it can lower your stress level.

3. Prioritize Your Work
We all love to start work on things that are close to our hearts. However, often these may not be the most urgent and important in our list of tasks in the workplace. When you select things you are more interested in rather than work that is more important or urgent, you lower your chances of success.

Have a list of things to do according to its strategic importance to your company. Know your role in completing the tasks at hand in order to achieve that corporate goal. When you prioritize your work, you are more productive and that increases your chances of career success.

4. Stay Positive
As someone new in the working world it is very easy to feel down because you are new. You are not used to the work system. You have new people to deal with and people in the working world who behave very differently from school. It takes a lot of getting used to. There will be office politics to deal with regardless of how little.

Be above all these and stay positive in the face of challenges. When you are positive you remain focused on your goals. You make better decisions and therefore become more productive.

5. Highlight A Problem But Bring Solutions
The last effective work habit of the five effective work habits is to bring solutions each time you highlight a problem to your boss or management. You need to remember that when you bring problems and not solutions, it is often construed as complaining.

To avoid that label, offer solutions. A range of possible solutions also indicates to your boss that you have thought this through before approaching him/her with a problem. Have in mind a recommended solution amongst those you suggested.

These are the 5 effective work habits I constantly drill into new employees who are fresh graduates in our company. At first glance, these may seem like common sense. However, in actual working environment people tend to sometimes forget these very basic effective work habits. And don't practice them often enough. Internalize these and consistently practice them to increase your chances of success.

Is job-hopping and career success related to each other? What is the effect of one on the other? How long is too long for staying in a company? I must admit, the resumes that pass by my desk makes me conclude job-hopping is far too common.

Job hoppers do it for various reasons. More often than not they may not know what they are getting into. Sometimes, it is because they do not know what they want and hence are not ready for the challenges that lay ahead of them.

In my opinion, changing jobs often affects your career in a negative manner. Consider this, what signals are you sending to your potential employer if you job-hop too often?

The Two-Year Rule

I have a two-year rule I tell my staff and potential employees. The two-year rule is this – you must be willing to commit mentally to spend at least two years in the company before you quit. The reason is this; you need to deal with the learning curve. If you job-hop too often, you learn nothing substantial.

For me, it takes you at least a year to know the ins and outs of the company. Then another year before you can eventually be truly productive in adding value to the company. To see the true results of your contribution to the company, for me it takes at least two years. So, if you are prone to changing jobs and career success is on your mind, then it is time to rethink.

Training You
Many well-established companies have training programs. They are willing to invest in fresh graduates and newbies. However, in order for them to make that decision they need to look at past track records. Ask yourself, if you are a manager – who are you more likely to invest training time and money on? Someone who is job-hopper and shows tendency to job-hop or someone who is stable? Companies are more likely to invest in people who are stable. The reason is simple. They are able to contribute back into the company. Everybody wins. If you are constantly moving from one job to another, you send a signal that you are not ready to commit.

Companies like to invest in people who see their career goals align with their corporate goals. Job-hoppers usually cannot see their career path beyond the next year.

Decreasing the Incidence of Job-Hopping

One of the best ways to quit job-hopping is to truly know what you want. Once you know that, you will have singular focus in the pursuit of your career goals. Of course, it is understandable that as a fresh graduate or newbie at work it is tough to know that. You may be interested in some other industries.

If there are other fields that you are interested in then make a plan to find out about them. Start with the Internet, and then ask friends who may know people in those fields. Speak to them; ask them about the expectations of the company and the role of the position you are interested in. You may not have all the answers but at least you get some idea. That would decrease the chances of you jumping jobs.

Make Learning a Key Objective

If you are new in the work force and have been job-hopping quite a bit, my advice to you is this - truly find out what you want. Once you know that, find a company that is willing to train or how they are willing to commit to their employees’ career in the long term. If they have structured training programs, join them.

Make learning the relevant skills and knowledge in that industry your key objective. The skills and knowledge that you learn will contribute to your career success in the long term. It is something that you can bring with you the rest of your life. Once you see the benefits of committing to a company who is willing to train you for more than two years, hopefully you won’t be job-hopping often anymore.

Are you in a job that you don't like, or even hate? Do you wish you could enjoy your job, even love it? Here are 5 key steps to take in getting a job that you will love doing.

Step 1. Understand yourself
It is important to understands what is really important to you. What do you truly value? What do you really want to get from a job? Is money the most important thing, or learning and development, or helping others? Be honest with yourself. Don't listen to what anyone else tells you should be important.

Step 2. Research, research, research

Once you have worked out what is important to you then you need to look at what jobs could give you those things. Check out potential job types on the internet. Find people who do certain types of jobs and talk to them. Find professional bodies and forums where you can ask questions. Find out which jobs will really offer you those things that you value.

Step 3. Plan

You may need to train to get the job you want, or get additional qualifications. You will certainly need to consider how you are going to search for the right vacancy, will you use recruitment agencies, the internet, newspapers, trade magazines etc. Will you contact potential employers to see what vacancies are available? How much of this will you do each week?

Step 4. Have a powerful advert

Your CV / Resume is your advert for you. It is the document, along with the covering letter, that your potential employer will use to judge whether or not to see you for interviews. Make sure you have a powerful CV / Resume and a strong concise covering letter.

Step 5. Prepare to sell

The interview is your chance to sell yourself. Make sure that you prepare for it. Have your questions ready. Ideally research the organisation you are going to. Make sure you turn up in plenty of time. Dress appropriately and so on.

While vacation is supposed to be a time to get away from work, decompress, and reconnect with family and friends, more and more professionals are spending their vacation preparation time making sure that they will be fully connected to work while they're gone through their blackberries, cell phones, laptops, iPads, and programs such as LogMeIn or GoToMyPC. While these technologies have certainly made workers more accessible in positive ways, it is important for your mental health to get away from time to time.

Why are we using our precious vacation time to travel to an interesting location, and then work the whole time we are there? Even if you promise you're just going to check in "a couple times," it is highly likely that you will not get the same feeling of relaxation as you would if you had left your work at the office.

Try this. When you go on vacation, relax. Do not worry about work. Enjoy time with family, friends, or quiet time alone. Use the time to replenish your mind and spirit, so you can return to work re-energized and at the top of your productivity. Try these three things next time you are on vacation:

- Quit answering your cell phone. Especially if you have a separate cell phone for work, just turn it off. If your cell does double duty for both your work and personal life, send an e-mail out to your coworkers letting them know that they can leave a message for you on your desk phone while you are out.

Sure, there may be a coworker who did not plan appropriately for your absence and has now decided to start working on a project where he urgently needs information from you. Don't be tempted to help out for just a minute... you will get sucked in and spend your valuable vacation time working because of someone else's bad planning. Just don't answer that phone.

- Leave your computer at home. If you want to enjoy a vacation away from work, there are 2 reasons you should not even think about taking your laptop with you.
The first reason you should leave your computer at home is that every time you walk past it, it will remind you of your job and all the work that you didn't finish before you left, or all the work that is piling up while you are away.

The second reason is that the temptation will likely be too great, and you will wind up connecting to the office and doing work when you should be reconnecting with your spouse, children, or friends. You could miss some of the most spectacular vacation moments because you are staring at a computer monitor. You WILL survive for a few days without the internet, email, and Microsoft office. I've done it myself, and lived to tell the tale.

- Break away from the old routine. If you've been catching the advice I've been throwing at you, this step should be a breeze. You have turned off your cell phone, left your laptop at home, and are ready for the vacation of a lifetime. Now, relax. Even if you can't travel to paradise, picture yourself on a secluded stretch of beach with a Mexican beer in your hand. Not a distraction in the world except the sound of the waves crashing on the beach. Get the picture?

Another way to stay away from the old routine and make your vacation memorable is to try something new. Take a cooking class, go hiking, sleep under the stars, get SCUBA certified, go on a dinner cruise, see a play, whatever! Just do something you've never done before! It's a great way to relax, broaden your horizons, and focus your attention on things other than work.

With the high level of connectivity that we can now have from just about anywhere on the globe, it becomes increasingly important for you to make an effort to get away from the hustle and bustle of the office when you go on vacation. Try following these tips, and in no time, you will have forgotten about work and be enjoying every minute of your vacation. And when you return to work, you will be that much more productive!

Tips for Finding Work After A Long Break

You found a job and you are very happy with the results. After a long layoff, you find yourself with a job and the main problem that you have right now is the need to adjust to life after being out of work. You now need to go out and be prepared for a new experience like meeting people, a new working environment and more importantly, working on time and waking up early in the morning.

So if you are one of the people who are in this kind of a quandary, here are some of the things that may help you get out of this rut.

Do not rush

One of the things that you need to remember is that you need not rush into making seamless transition to your new work and your new environment. If you really need to go out and have a change in lifestyle, go have a dry run first and start waking up early in the morning a week or so before your designated time of employment in the company. After doing so you will be able to go out and wake up early a week later.

Research

Do a bit of research in the company that you will be going to. You need to at least know what the goings on and the different issues or news about the company. The more you know about the company that you will be able to go out and work for, the easier it is for you to become integrated in it.

Introduce your self to the boss

Another thing that you need to do is to go out and introduce your self to the boss. You need to go out and be acquainted with the man that you will be working for. Not only that but you need to go out and talk about his expectations as well as what the company requires you to do. Not only that, but if you want to be promoted, you can ask for the things that you need to do in order to further your career.

Know the culture

Also, know the culture of the company that you will be working for. You need to go out know how they operate as well as know how the people in it work and what their habits are. As I said earlier, the more you know about the company that you will be working for, the easier it will be for you.
